Information on Massage

Swedish massage is the type of massage most people think of when they think of massage. Swedish massage is aimed at relaxation. The types of strokes used are long gliding strokes, kneading, tapotement (tapping, vibrating, or drumming), friction, and in some cases, stretching and strengthening aided by the Massage Therapist.

Medical massage is a treatment directed at resolving specific conditions that have been diagnosed. Medical massage usually employs Swedish techniques to focus on specific areas of the body related to the client’s diagnosis or condition, for instance, sciatica, tension headaches, back strain, etc.

Sports massage employs mainly Swedish techniques to aid in soft tissue recovery and injury prevention. The goal is to rid the body of tension build-up in the muscles due to regular activity. Unresolved tension and imbalances can cause stress on joints, ligaments, tendons, and the muscles themselves.

How does massage work?

In a ‘tight’ muscle, muscle fibers tend to stick together or ‘adhere’ which restricts the amount of blood and lymph fluid which can flow to the muscle. Muscle fibers need a regular supply of blood which supplies fresh nutrients and oxygen to the cells, and lymph fluid which allows the body to heal and maintain small tears and strain in the muscles caused by daily activities.

Massage manually pushes toxins out of and blood and lymph into muscles and around the body, thereby increasing nutrients, oxygen, and healing fluid to specific areas in need as well as general areas for maintenance.

Some of the benefits of massage:

  • Increased circulation
  • Decreased pain and tension
  • Decreased anxiety
  • Better quality of sleep
  • Reduced symptoms of stress
